/ ABOUT US

NVSS grew from the recognition that longstanding service gaps required system-level change.

Traditional speech therapy service models often rely on infrequent visits from specialists, limiting continuity and long-term impact within schools.

NVSS reimagines speech therapy for remote communities by prioritizing community capacity-building over external dependency. This approach supports consistent and intensive intervention through practical systems designed for long-term sustainability.

SPEECH AND HEARING SERVICES

NVSS provides school-based speech and hearing services designed to support early identification, targeted intervention, and sustainable in-school programming.

/ SPEECH

School-Based Speech Centers

NVSS partners with schools to establish and support school-based speech centres that are led by local staff and guided closely by our team of speech-language pathologists.

Through in-person assessment, intensive training, and ongoing clinical oversight, designated school team members are equipped to deliver consistent, high-quality speech intervention within their own school environment. This model allows schools to provide regular, day-to-day support for students, rather than relying solely on infrequent external visits, while strengthening staff skill-building and long-term capacity. By working alongside team members who know the students, languages, and community context, NVSS ensures speech programming is effective, culturally responsive, and sustainable.

Services within this model focus specifically on speech sound disorders, which represent the largest area of communication need in early school settings. This approach allows externally contracted specialists to concentrate their time and expertise on students with more complex communication needs.

SPEECH SERVICES INCLUDE:

In-person, class-wide speech screenings (Pre-K to Grade 2) conducted at the start of the school year to support early identification of speech sound disorders. As early childhood specialists, our team of SLPs also observe broader developmental indicators during the screening process, and schools receive a summary of students who may benefit from further evaluation and/or referrals.

PEASE NOTE: While class-wide screenings (early years) focus on Pre-K to Gr. 2, our team is happy to screen and support students in any grade. Individual screenings for older students can be arranged as needed.

Three-day immersive training conference (held in Saskatoon)featuring in-depth professional learning on evidence-based speech strategies, program implementation, and effective use of intervention resources. The conference includes structured breakout sessions and hands-on training designed to build staff knowledge, skill, and confidence.

Follow-up (in-person) training post conference to support teams in applying their learning and begin programming. This is complemented by quarterly school visits, where our team provides hands-on modeling, troubleshooting, and program support to ensure successful implementation.

Comprehensive, individualized therapy plans informed by assessment results, with clearly defined targets and structured weekly goals to guide intervention. Each student receives easy-to-track goal sheets that allow school teams to monitor progress over time.

Provision of all materials and resources required to deliver effective speech intervention, including caseload therapy binders and structured program materials.

Ongoing virtual consultation and clinical support, including:

  • Monthly student progress reviews to monitor growth, adjust targets, and ensure therapy remains responsive to student needs.

  • Monthly coaching calls to provide guidance, answer questions, and support effective implementation of speech intervention strategies.

*School teams are encouraged to reach out at any time with questions or to request additional guidance as needed.

NVSS SPEECH Therapy Card Sets were designed by our team of speech-language pathologists to target specific speech sounds in defined word positions.

Developed with careful consideration of phonemic context, these cards support effective practice and are used as a core resource across all NVSS speech sessions. One speech therapy card set is included in each kit (number of kits selected above).

Additional sets and materials can be purchased for staff members not running the speech program.

NVSS Speech Kit

The NVSS Speech Kit includes all tools, equipment, and structured materials required to operate the school-based speech center and facilitate effective speech practice sessions.

Each kit is intentionally curated to support a wide range of learners and includes therapy aids, visual supports, interactive games, structured sound decks, caseload binders, and program management resources. Together, these materials provide everything needed to confidently run and organize speech sessions within the school setting.

We recommend one kit per staff member / designated speech EA facilitating the school speech center, ensuring each individual has the materials required to effectively manage their caseload and deliver structured speech sessions.

Schools may select the number of kits that best aligns with their staffing structure and program size.

NVSS is bridging speech therapy and language revitalization!

Our team is proud to partner with communities and schools to develop language resources that account for (and celebrate!) linguistic diversity. Our language card decks are designed to support culturally grounded practice and meaningful engagement with students’ home languages.

For communities, schools, and/or programs interested in developing their own language resources, NVSS welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with local translators and language keepers. Custom language decks are developed in partnership to ensure linguistic accuracy, cultural integrity, and alignment with community priorities. This work is guided by principles of language sovereignty and community ownership, and follows OCAP® principles, ensuring that language resources remain respectful of and rooted within the communities they represent.

Furthermore, for teams that develop their own language card decks, NVSS will create a dedicated portal within the NVSS Teach Speech app at no additional cost. Through these portals, staff, students, and family members can access their community’s culturally grounded language resources directly within the app, making language learning and practice readily available both in the classroom and at home.

Select this option and our team will connect with you to explore possibilities, timelines, and next steps.

For the custom langauge kits, for no extra cost, we'll create your community or school portal within the app that incorporates the translated langauge for them.

Conference registration is included for school staff members directly involved in the implementation of the NVSS Speech Center, such as school administration, inclusive education instructors, and designated educational assistant(s). We also strongly recommend that at least one additional EA/TA attend the conference to support program continuity in the event of staffing changes or absences.

The conference also provides meaningful professional development for early educators, including foundational learning related to speech and language development as well as practical, classroom-based strategies.

Additional staff members or personnel are welcome to attend; however, registration for those not directly involved with the speech program (e.g., classroom educators) is available at an additional cost

/ HEARING

Hearing Screens

Hearing screenings support early identification of audiological concerns that may impact speech, language, and learning.

Annual hearing screening in the early school years is considered best practice and supports proactive identification of concerns that may impact speech, language, and learning. NVSS is proud to offer school-based hearing services by grade grouping, using clinical tympanometry equipment to assess middle ear health and function.

Individualized student reports and referral recommendations are provided following screening, supporting timely follow-up and collaborative audiological care.
